Historic Jacarilla
The village of JacarillaJacarilla's name stems from the medieval songs sung about the exploits of knights in shining armour against the marauding Moorish empire.

Jacarilla is a small town where everyday life meanders hand in hand with tradition and tranquillity and the remnants of the past have forged the personality of this unmistakeable municipality of just over 1,600 inhabitants lost in a sea of orange trees in the Jacarilla countryside.

The palace of the Marques de FontalbaJacarilla celebrates it's main fiestas commemorating La Virgen del Belen, patron of the town every September. A floral offerings and processions fill Jacarilla with colour and sound in honour of the Virgin.

The neogothic church of JacarillaIt was Don Bartolomé Togores, a nobleman closely linked to King Jaime I, who became lord of Jacarilla in the latter part of the fifteenth century, putting this settlement on the map. His descendents finally gave up the birthright in favour of Marquis of Fontalba in the early nineteenth century.

JacarillaThe Marquis was very much an aristocrat of his time and wanted to make the point of it. He commissioned a stately home with 28 bedrooms surrounded by over 20,000 m2 of exotic gardens with palm trees, hibiscus, together with the beautiful lilac Jacaranda trees. A collection of tropical birds and doves still remains which give a colonial feel to the Marquis' home.

JacarillaFor his secular needs, he also had built a Gothic church with a private booth and family seals that decorate both the façacde and stain glass windows.

The mansion and the gardens, today in municipal hands, is the gem of this quiet village between Orihuela and the Mediterranean Sea. A thriving agricultural sector has brought about an air prosperity which has resulted in the complete renovation of the Marquis' property as well as improvements to all the aspects of the village.

Orihuela

Orihuela The signs of the aristocracy of yesteryear are still present in the region, especially in the nearby Orihuela. The religious and political importance of Orihuela is evident in many of the buildings of the city, such as the two cathedrals and the Circus Theatre. Although Jacarilla had a certain degree of autonomy due to the Civil Guard's headquarters and school also commissioned by the Marquis of Fontalba.

OrihuelaNot all is down to history and tradition. Golf has become very popular with the increasing number of international residents on the coast wanting to play their favourite sport in optimum conditions. Only 5 minutes drive from Jacarilla the new La Finca golf course is proving to be a great success.

Jacarilla is more than just a village with traditions and gardens. It's many corners continually show a different aspect to it's history, people and culture. A hidden treasure in the heart of the Alicante countryside.
